Okay, cool. I've added that to the ttys file I already had.
I'll try that and if it doesn't work I'll try the other stuff.
I suppose I could also try to enable telnetd so I could just
log in from the server (maybe)...

No, that's backwards. There's no ttyv0 deveoice.
You want something like this:
# Openfirmware console
ofwcons "/usr/libexec/getty std.9600" vt100 on secure
In the installed /etc/ttys that will be visible from your mac.
