I had a similar problem the other day when I hooked up
a printer to my FBSD 4.2 server.  The initial problem was
that the cable hooked into the MB was backwards, once I
shutdown, reversed the cable and rebooted, it worked (at
least it didn't say device busy, working is a diff story :)).

the other time, I had forgotten I had unplugged it.  Judging
from that, it could be that the power is off, the cable is bad
or other connection problems.
