Hi,

I am encountering this with lastest update of 4-STABLE.

I saw a somewhat related discussion last March on "umass panic...",
where USB VIA chipsets were considered to be troublesome:
   http://www.mail-archive.com/freebsd-stable@freebsd.org/msg60471.html

I also have VIA chipsets, but slighltly different problems.

It must be a FreeBSD problem, since the USB port worked just fine when
previously Windows/XP was installed on this computer.

(I also have tested it on another computer with Intel USB chips, and
there things work flawlessly!).

Boot up says (see below for full dmesg output):
  uhci0: <VIA 83C572 USB controller> port 0xc400-0xc41f irq 10 at device 7.2 on pci0
  usb0: <VIA 83C572 USB controller> on uhci0
  usb0: USB revision 1.0
uhub0: VIA UHCI root hub, class 9/0, rev 1.00/1.00, addr 1
uhub0: 2 ports with 2 removable, self powered

And when pluging in the storage device:
  umass0: vendor 0x090a product 0x1001, rev 1.10/1.00, addr 2
umass0: Get Max Lun not supported (TIMEOUT)
  da0 at umass-sim0 bus 0 target 0 lun 0
  da0: <Newgen SmartMediaCard R/W> Removable Direct Access SCSI-0 device
  da0: 650KB/s transfers
  da0: 62MB (127945 512 byte sectors: 64H 32S/T 62C)

Mounting this device with "mount_msdos /dev/da0s1 /mnt" is okay.
The umass filesystem is there. Problems start when unmounting it.
The umount command will hang and eventually the whole system will hang.
Power off/on is only what helps then.

Any ideas how to deal with this?

Regards,
Rob.
