Ah. Thanks for the automate command. I just find it strange since if 'make world' was designed to update the entire system, having an older kernel.GENERIC lying around by default is a bit weird. I don't think the "make world" page in the handbook states that kernel.GENERIC isn't updated by default. Maybe just a note that you could update that too.
