I had similar problems getting XFree86 to run on my box (also under
4.2).  In my case this problem appeared to be that I was selecting the
incorrect monitor settings, so that is where I would suggest starting. 
(In my case it also has something to do with the fact that it's a
monitor the university was throwing out for being too old so I have no
actual info on it.)  

However, keep in mind that this advice is worth every penny you paid for
it... ;>
