We are currently using a Qmail-based system that authenticates off of a MySQL database. User accts are administered via PHP scripts. Up until recently it was working great. Now we're having issues with the MySQL database locking the entire table whenever there is an update, such as someone changing their password. MySQL should be able to handle this whenever row level locking is introduced. Due to this problem, and a few others, we're going to be migrating to PostgreSQL.
