>Drop dead. You can say it's boring to do and that Real Programmers (TM) don't >need it, go ahead, but I don't need the sarcasm. I think you're taking his comments rather more scathingly than they were intended. I don't want to put words in Eivind's mouth, but the way I read it (given the benefit of some knowledge of freebsd history) is that since the "we need a better upgrade" suggestion was first made sometime in 1994, right after 1.1 was released, what's needed now is not so much the suggestion but the implementation. Trust me, we *know* this is needed and we've known it quite literally for years now. There have probably been several hundred posts on this topic at this point and I've seen at least 10 different designs proposed, any one of which would have been better than what we have now except for the tiny problem that nobody ever bothered to implement one of them. This isn't sarcasm, this is just a plain statement of the facts. Yes, we need a better upgrade. I would KILL for a better upgrade. I'm also finding myself in the position where I have less and less time available for actual engineering work as time goes on, so the chances of my finding the time and energy to implement the kind of upgrade framework we've all been dreaming about are increasingly remote. That means that somebody else is going to have to do it and that "somebody else" has never been found. The outlook for upgraders is pretty bleak, and suggesting it yet again merely rubs salt in the wounds of those who have literally been counting off the years hoping that this would happen, hence the tone of the reply you received. Hope this helps clear that up, anyway. Jordan To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-stable" in the body of the message
