My guess it's because LaTeX sees a `\\[VSPACE]' command, even when the
optional parameter is on the next line.

Perhaps SGMLs <newline> should be translated to something more smart in
general, like `\\{}' (or `\\\mbox{}', whatever, but a real {La,}TeX guru
probably can come up with a nice solution).
