it doesn't have to do anything with kde at all...
i guess you're trying to start X as a normal user, using 'startx', right?
if so, that wouldn't work unless you install the /usr/ports/x11/wrapper
port. but a better way is to run it under either xdm, gdm or kdm, depending
on taste.
