This is due to PHK's recent breakage of the syscons driver. When you get 
to a prompt type 'stty echo' and all will be well. He announced this 
yesterday but I guess you missed it. This is part of a bigger cleanup he 
is doing on our tty drivers. Hang in there for now, I'm sure it will be 
unbroken soon.
