JAVA_HOME is not expressly set - my understanding was that environment
variables such as that were set by the wrappers in jdk1.1.7/bin/*?

[/usr/home/graeme]$ export JAVA_HOME=/usr/local/jdk1.1.7/
[/usr/home/graeme]$ javac
Unable to initialize threads: cannot find class java/lang/Thread
