I am trying to install FreeBSD onto an old 486 that wandered my way. I thought that it would be fun to play around with and give me a chance to learn more about this OS and computers in general. I want to install from the CDs so I downloaded the "kern.flp" and "mfsroot.flp" boot disks which seemed to work and send me to the UserConfig screen. I have a Matsushita/Panasonic CR 563 CD-ROM drive that is connected to a sound card. The CD-ROM lights up when I first boot up the machine. After setting port to: -1 in UserConfig for this device it still came up undetected. I have spent a couple of days mucking around with 4.4-release but the matcdc0 driver never showed up at all in UserConfig. So, I tried 3.5.1 and, at least, the device showed up in the list of potential drivers to choose from. Let me know if I should explain that a little more clearly. A gentle nudge to get me moving in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message
