Okay, that's as expected, since there would normally be an error returned
when no media is in the drive, but for some reason autosense isn't working,
so we're just getting the autosense failed error.

The inquiry works, except for the serial number, which is normal for most
CDROM drives.

Some drives take a while.  So the drive can return good status, autosense
is just broken when there's an error.

That's probably our best bet for isolating the problem.  This is a problem
somewhere below the CD driver, but I'm not sure where.
