I have been using an SMP kernel for more than 2 years without any problems, but it might be related to your Compaq SmartArray 221 controller card. Try using a newer release, such as FreeBSD 4.4-RELEASE or 4.5-RELEASE. I didn't have any problems with 4.5-RELEASE on my test machine which has four proccessors on an Intel Server Board.
