Since mergemaster is a port and not part of the base system,
problems with it should be sent to me directly so we don't bother all the
nice people. :)

This indicates to me that something is missing from your stuff in
/usr/src/etc, which almost certainly is an up to date Makefile. How did
you install the sources? What does 'ls /usr/src/etc/Makefile' say?
