A 2.9GB /usr at 84% full should have >300MB free... so unless you're planning on getting close to that, it's not clear to me that you have a problem. That said, it's been my (limited) experience that a common consumer of /usr space is /usr/ports/distfiles; once the port is installed, I believe that the distfiles may be blown away with impunity.
