With the HD as Master and CD as slave (via cable select or jumperd) we get "ata0-slave: ATA identify retries exceeded" (boot -v from 4.11 included bellow) However if we make the CD master and HD slave via cable select or jumpers all works fine. In RELENG_6 a regular boot on the vga console panics while trying to identify the ata0 slave when CD is slave. However boot -v on the vga console works as does any boot on a comconsole. (Does this suggest some kind of timing problem?) Again making the CD master and HD fixes this. In RELENG_4 we found either using a rev 2.6 MB, or replacing either the HD or CD with another model (IBM deskstar HD or an old HP CD-R) would also work round the problem. Linux and windows work OK with CD as slave or master. As the panic doesn't occur when using the serial console I only have it as a JPEG which I can email on request. Hyperterminal rather mangled the RELENG_6 boot -v output but this is the ata device section: ata0-slave: pio=PIO4 wdma=WDMA2 udma=UDMA33 cable=40 wire bus 0 dev 31 func 0 ACPI-1304: *** Error: SMAP type=02 ata0-master: pio=PIO4 wdma=WDMA2 udma=UDMA100 cable=80 wireiOsDerivePciId: bus 0 dev 0 func 0at 0x1880type=02 base=000 ad0: setting PIO4 on ICH5 chip bus 0 dev 31 func 0ANT-LOCKED ad0: setting UDMA100 on ICH5 chipink0: Links after initial probe:U ad0: 38162MB <Seagate ST340014A 8.10> at ata0-master UDMA100QsRQ Rtd usb3: USB revisi 0 11 N 0 3 4 5 7 9 ad0: 78156288 sectors [77536C/16H/63S] 16 sexists; ex_isa_i acd0: setting UDMA33 on ICH5 chip 0 3 4 5 7 9 10 11 12 14 15n acd0: <HL-DT-ST CD-ROM GCR-8482B/1.06> CDROM drive at ata0 as slave initial probe:EHCI version 1.0reeBSD 6.1-BETA1 #0: Index IRQ Rt acd0: read 8250KB/s (8250KB/s), 128KB buffer, UDMA33 0 3 4 5 7 9 10 11 12 14 15falo.edu:/usr/obj/us acd0: Reads: CDR, CDRW, CDDA stream, packetafter initial validation:pci0: Preloaded e acd0: Writes:ot/kernel/ In acd0: Audio: play, 255 volume levelsad_Port at 2c 0 9 N 0 acd0: Mechanism: ejectable tray, unlocked, lock protected)tus reg tes pci_link1: Links after disable: uhub4: 8 por acd0: Medium: CD-ROM 120mm data discef IRQsype=0x00 Boot -v from RELENG_4 ok boot -v SMAP type=01 base=0000000000000000 len=000000000009f800 SMAP type=02 base=000000000009f800 len=0000000000000800 SMAP type=02 base=00000000000e0000 len=0000000000020000 SMAP type=01 base=0000000000100000 len=000000000f670000 SMAP type=03 base=000000000f770000 len=000000000000a000 SMAP type=04 base=000000000f77a000 len=0000000000006000 SMAP type=02 base=000000000f780000 len=0000000000080000 SMAP type=02 base=000000000f800000 len=0000000000800000 SMAP type=02 base=00000000fec00000 len=0000000000010000 SMAP type=02 base=00000000fee00000 len=0000000000001000 SMAP type=02 base=00000000ff800000 len=0000000000800000 Copyright (c) 1992-2005 The FreeBSD Project.
