Hi Mike!
Well, if you used mergemaster for tracking stable you might have noticed that 
::1 is in the default /etc/hosts. But it sounds like this should be in 
UPDATING (as a requirement - just like the "smmsp" user).
Otherwise I agree that sendmail should behave better :)
