Actually maybe I spoke too soon. Two of the machines just hung this morning. Same symptom (responds to ping, telnet connects but gets only blank lines in responses to return) as before. This is a slightly newer kernel (had to put IPv6 in it) but ffs_softdep.c is still at 1.56.
