  The rebuilding issue is quite a problem.  However, for small updates it
is possible to do a incremental update (copy the db files, update the one
record, and then mv them back).

  Howerver, 6 to 7k users is pretty small.  I have 25k+ (using NIS), and
rebuilding from a new master.passwd file takes maybe 5 seconds on a
PIII-600 with fast disks.
