There's a comparative table that lists the major apps used like the window manager, web browser and so on. VectorLinux home page --> VL versions --> bottom of page. I use both Gnome and FVWM and I notice a difference in performance. FVWM is faster than Gnome. By watching what you install you should be able to improve performance.
