Like I said I'm open to solutions. But reverting the Alpha case does not fix the problem. And that is, if you install on an Alpha using a serial console (IMO a very common occurrence), you are not able to login as root until you remember to boot single user and edit /etc/ttys. While not a hard thing to do, I personally always forget and have to kill the power to reboot -- something I really don't like doing. Would it be preferable to enable a secure getty on `ttyd0'?
