If you use the recommended process of "buildworld and *THEN* buildkernel", the compiler toolchain that is built from /usr/src as part of the system upgrade is used for the kernel too. The /usr/src/Makefile.inc1 makefile contains a lot of comments that may be instructive, if you're interested to look at all the details. - Giorgos
