Could be a few things. First, does,
$ dig jon.vc.net
Or
$ dig @127.0.0.1 jon.vc.net
Work at ns1? Second, what does,
$ netstat -an | fgrep .53
Return? Finally, what about,
$ ifconfig
This should help.
