:I just updated my kernel on one machine from about October to
:yesterday's latest, and I'm suddenly getting a lot of these messages:
:
:Jan 1 15:50:40 xyz /kernel: object inconsistant state: RPC: 3, RC: 0
:Jan 1 15:50:40 xyz /kernel: object inconsistant state: RPC: 14, RC: 0

Try fsck'ing all your filesystems manually from single-user.
It also looks like this code segment runs at splbio(), which
is not high enough since vm_page_free() can mess with the vnode_tobefree
list without using the vnode_free_list_slock. It needs to run at splvm()
at the very least. Try changing:
s = splbio();
to:
s = splvm();
At around line 395 if kern/vfs_subr.c, in getnewvnode(). I dunno if this
will solve the errors you are getting, though, since I run a
pretty-heavily networked box and don't see these errors at all (and
the difference between splbio() and splvm() is the addition of the
network mask). If you can find some way to reproduce it on demand
we might be able to track down exactly what is causing it.
Are you using your network heavily? NFS (server or client)?

:...every time I access the filesystem (e.g., with `ls'). Since this
:makes the machine unusable, I have for the moment commented out the
:message. This message was added in rev. 1.134 (1998-02-23) by dyson
:with a log message indicating that the condition should not occur. It
:appeared to have been triggered (the first time) by a `ps' command.
:
:Anybody have any better ideas on what's going on here? For the
:record, this is a dual-processor SMP, with nothing else special about
:its configuration.
