I've loaded 4.x and 6.x on Compaqs in the past.  I don't recall which 
models, specifically, but I don't recall running into anything out of the 
ordinary.  All were SCSI rackmount boxes, and at least two had RAID 
controllers installed which FreeBSD recognized and used just fine.
