Any idea about the first line? Yes. www.yourvote.com (best PCI ID list I've found) lists it as a Brooktree Bt878 Video Capture (audio section). Huh. I wonder if the bktr driver can use that directly... > So, should I leave in > device pcm0 at isa? irq 10 drq 1 flags 0x0 > or should I make it > device pcm > ? Actually, I don't bother putting anything in the kernel for 'pcm' these days, although I don't think it hurts if you do - KLDs will auto-load any dependancies, in this case the 'snd_pcm' KLD. > Anyway, many thanks for your help. I used to listen to Loveline avidly driving home from work fr a while there... :-) Actually, the ESS isn't so bad... I find that it sometimes generates awful amounts of hiss - I put up with this for ages until I found that turning down all the unused inputs/outputs (especially PC speaker) fixes this. Also, on recent -stable, I find that post-boot or post-resume, the Master Output is set to 0 - you can use 'mixer' commands in your .xinitrc or rc.resume to take care of this, or I like 'wmix' (OSD mixer dockapp for WindowMaker) for interactive use.
