1) Do a binary upgrade. This will be *by far* the easiest for you
2) Upgrade to 3.2-RELEASE, then upgrade to 4.0-STABLE for the 3->4 upgrade
be sure to follow all the steps listed in /usr/src/UPDATING, closely)
