Fyi: I have narrowed this problem down somewhat.

Kernels with ACPI won't boot as far back as Jan 1st; other than the first
panic I reported I mostly see panics in ahc_pause_and_flushwork and in one
case I saw the ahc driver spamming the console during boot with messages that
interrupts may not be working.

Without ACPI, kernels up until April 3 (date=2004.04.03.00.00.00) work, April
4 (date=2004.04.04.00.00.00) hang hard. I'm staying with an April 3rd kernel
for now.

This machine already has the latest BIOS available.
