Why 8am-5pm?  Do you use the modem in your rotary at night?
It depends on what is at the other end, but I have had a customer using 
uucp over tcp for the last 18 months.  Works fine.
You can change the 4hours if you like, too, to say 24 hours but it does 
not cover the weekends.
