I asked a similar question and was told that the kernel configurator only shows drivers which are not capable of asking the card for its configuration. The ep driver behaves itself well, so it doesn't have to be in the configurator. I had problems getting 4.0 and 5.0 to boot on the 3c509 system until I went into the configurator and disabled all of the other network devices. Disabling all unnecessary drivers seems to be a best practice when running GENERIC.
