Going two games without a win may have not been a concern before, but there have been suggestions that the Saints could slip further down the table aft= er losing 3-0 to Manchester City on Sunday afternoon. Ronald Koeman was understandably disappointed as his side lost for just the third time this season, but he will be hopeful that his players will produc= e a quick response at the Emirates Stadium, where they recorded a 2-1 win in the League Cup back in September. For Arsenal, the weekend was a positive one as Danny Welbeck handed them a = 1-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion just days after a comfortable win over Borussia Dortmund had booked their spot in the next round of the Champions League. Doubts remain over Arsenal's ability to go on an extended run, but the win against the Baggies would have given the fans confidence heading into a hec= tic December schedule. However, Arsene Wenger heads into the game with another defensive crisis brewing due to injuries picked up by Nacho Monreal and Kieran Gibbs. Reports have suggested that Mathieu Flamini could be asked to fill in at left-back as a replacement for the injured duo. Southampton are sweating over the fitness of Morgan Schneiderlin, but there could be a recall for Shane Long, who started the game against City on the bench. Arsenal have given themselves a much needed boost with back-to-back wins, b= ut in order to get a third against Southampton on Wednesday they may have to negotiate yet another defensive injury crisis. Saturday=E2=80=99s 1-0 victo= ry over West Brom lifted Arsenal up to sixth place in the Premier League, just two points off a spot in the top four, and eased some of the mounting pressure on mana= ger Arsene Wenger after what had been the club=E2=80=99s worse start to a leagu= e season through 12 games for 32 years.=20 But it came at the expense of injury problems for both of their senior left-backs, Kieran Gibbs and Nacho Monreal. With Laurent Koscielny also a d= oubt for the visit of Southampton, having only just returned from a long-term Achilles complaint, Arsenal=E2=80=99s thin defensive resources are set to b= e tested once more. =E2=80=9CWe have some question marks about Monreal about Gibbs about [Oxlad= e-] Chamberlain,=E2=80=9D Wenger said in his pre-match press conference on Tues= day. =E2=80=9CThey have tests this morning. Everybody else looks to be available. Of course, as well as Koscielny just [coming] back after a long time, we will see how he responds this morning. I am still hoping that one of the two [Monreal and Gibbs] will be available.=E2=80=9D A reshuffle in defense would be particularly frustrating given that Arsenal= are coming off the back of keeping successive clean sheets for only the second = time this season. With Mathieu Debuchy out since September, although set to retu= rn in a week=E2=80=99s time, and Koscielny, Gibbs, Monreal and former Southamp= ton man Calum Chambers all having spells out injured, Arsenal=E2=80=99s back line h= as been altered frequently this campaign. =E2=80=9CDefensive stability is very important for us,=E2=80=9D Wenger said= . =E2=80=9CWe have been quite stable recently and that=E2=80=99s what we want to continue. It=E2=80= =99s vital for us that we find out defensive stability that we haven=E2=80=99t had since the = start of the season.=E2=80=9D Arsenal will face opponents looking to rebound from a first defeat in seven matches, and an emphatic one at that. Despite losing a host of top talent, including Chambers to Arsenal, over the summer, Southampton made a sensatio= nal start to the season under new manager Ronald Koeman. But Sunday=E2=80=99s c= lash with champions Manchester City represented the first in a tough run of fixtures = that many have viewed as a litmus test for Southampton=E2=80=99s Champions League credentials.=20 A heavy 3-0 defeat to a City side that finished with 10 men was far from an ideal start to a streak that also sees them take on Manchester United after traveling to the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday. But right-back Nathaniel Cl= yne, who earned his first England caps last month, is purely focused on the upco= ming challenge. =E2=80=9CWe have reacted] positively,=E2=80=9D he told Southampton=E2=80=99= s official website. =E2=80=9CWe went over the game, decided what went wrong and we=E2=80=99ve put that game [aga= inst Manchester City] to bed. =E2=80=9CWe=E2=80=99ve got another big game on Wed= nesday and we need to put in a good performance there. The games are coming thick and fast throughout the Christmas period so focus quickly turned to Arsenal. There w= as no time to dwell on it, we just have to move on and just pick ourselves up = for the next game and try and put in a good performance there.=E2=80=9D Southampton will have to do without Morgan Schneiderlin at the Emirates aft= er the influential midfielder was forced off against Manchester City. Jay Rodriguez, James Ward-Prowse and Sam Gallagher remain sidelined, but Jack C= ork is available after illness. Prediction: Southampton have already won once at the Emirates this season, = in the Capital One Cup, but the loss of Schneiderlin makes their task of repea= ting that feat on Wednesday considerably tougher. The France international is ke= y in shielding the back four and his absence was keenly felt in the second half against City.=20 Going forward, Southampton, with the invention of Dusan Tadic, pace and endeavor of Shane Long and penalty-box presence of Graziano Pell=C3=A8, cer= tainly have the capability of scoring against what could be a weak Arsenal defense. But at home, and with Alexis Sanchez, Danny Welbeck and Olivier Giroud in tandem, Arsenal should get the win. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.=
