Possible workaround, also interesting as a diagnostic: Try DISPLAY=localhost:0 and/or DISPLAY=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:0 (xxx... = your system's own IP address). The first should cause X to use AF_INET instead of AF_UNIX (different transport mechanism) to talk to the local display. The second should do the same, but may take a different path through the network stack (depending on how smart the stack is about optimizing such things).
