We *think* it can go away. One thing we found referenced in the Web pages did seem useful (a tarball of the current /usr/ports directory, built regularly from branches/-current/ports) so we want to make alternative arrangements for that to continue. I also have a set of www/ and doc/ patches to submit as a PR which will remove all references I could find to the branches/ stuff on the web site and handbook.
