In some cases, in interactive mode, it allows special processing of '\'. Pw(8) is supposed to support multiple locales and I wasn't sure if someone might need it to escape non us-ascii characters (in gecos, for example). So, I'll leave that in there untill someone who understands non us-ascii users' requirements can enlighten me.
