I'd similar problems with my AS200 4/233 box.

Well, open the box and check HD pin's, there is one for parity ON/OFF.
As I remember it should be ON. [no pin]
In my case it was a Seagate ST31230N & ST31005N, living before with=
 AlphaBIOS.
That's all.

P.S
OpenBSD installation was much easier, no troubles at all.
