It is not necessary to create a bsdlabel and a partition within it for ZFS, but it can be done if so desired. zfsboot(8) is the worst, of course. It instructs to create a bsdlabel within the slice, but the subsequent instructions are for installing ZFS to the slice. So, the label is useless at best and harmful at worst.
