Check the output of mixer(1) in a konsole -- I _think_ 5.3-R came with a KDE version with a buggy kmixer that set all volumes to 0 on startup. The correct list for KDE-related questions is kde@freebsd.org, by the way (since this question doesn't seem very amd4=specific).
