I hear a lot of clicks and "peeps" (the peep sound gives me the impression that the motor of a head is trying to push the head through the case of the disk, but isn't able to stops trying it after a second) from the disk at one (or more) spurious interrupt(s). A "newfs -U -O 2 ad1s1a" results in at least one "click and peep" sequence. Mounting it results in a "beep", and running "iozone -a" results in a lot of beeps an clicks. Running it on both drives in parallel (without vinum) results in a hard hang of the system. I think attaching a monitor to the system will reveal, that it fails in the same way as it did with the vinum stripe. Do you want some more information than I submitted in the mail with the panic? I noticed, that Asus released a new BIOS for the board. It doesn't mentions any improvements in the area in question, but I will give it a try tomorrow too.
