looks like that's pretty much what he wrote in the original mail.
to the original poster:
I was fine with adding
Option "NoDDC"
to the Device section for the i810 chip (in /etc/X11/XF86Config).
others needed more tweaking. it's in the archives -- this question
comes out about twice a week.
