just noticed the typo in the subject. should have been syslog.conf. also i fixed it by adding: local0.none for /var/log/messages so i'm all set and have it logging how i wanted it. it appears log-login logs on level .notice or above which is why messages was picking it up. i had thought it was logging on .info and messages wouldn't catch it or if i set local0.* it would work like an ACL and go with the first match but it doesn't appear to. thanks again.
