Personally, I prefer to let NT do what it was designed to do, and be a print/file server to Microsoft clients. Part of the reason for this is that the management tools on NT can be explained to an advanced Windows user, and I don't have to mess with it myself all the time. On the other hand, Samba provides a highly configurable file service for Microsoft clients, and according to many reports it's more resource-efficient. Personally, I prefer to use Samba's tools to do trouble shooting on NetBEUI networks. > Can anyone forsee any problems with this plan? the office uses nt and > mac. And yes, you can access NT shares (and even mount them) using Samba's toolset. > will Nt be able to read files stored on the bsd box and vice versa Yup. > will macs be able to do the same (particularly g3's) I'll leave that to someone else. I would strongly recommend you stick a DAT (or other tape) drive directly in the FreeBSD box itself for backup purposes. It's probably advisable to let the BSD and NT boxes each do their own backups on their own drives. > and then hardware compatibility: > I shall probably have the following spec: > PII 450 or 350 > adaptec 2940 UW SCSI controller > 9 Gig Fast wide SCSI Hard drive > 100 Mb/s 3com network card > S3 Virge Graphics card Probably overkill, esp. that processor. :-) But if you can afford it, hell, go for it... > Connected to an optic line via a 3com router Ugh, I hate those 3Com routers. :-) > I'm really sorry this post is so long. > and thanks alot in advance.
