The same thing happened to the -stable archives four or five months back. They were unavailable for the better part of a month, if memory serves. The webmaster for www.freebsd.org mentioned that this happened because of some problems with the software (freewais-sf) that indexes the messages. After this was brought to his attention, he had it fixed in a matter of days. Perhaps this is a similar problem. There were opinions expressed on -stable that when the archives are not available, it might be nice to display a list of alternative sites that contained much of the same information. Unfortunately, those feelings were never translated into action. Should we open a PR about this? Perhaps something along the lines of "when -whatever archives are down, the error message returned should also list a series of alternative sites."
