Try just "su user" without the "-", and you won't have the error. With the "su - user" method you're running the user's .profile (or equivalent) as for their normal login. There is a mesg command in there. That command won't work in an xterm (or whatever ttyp3 is), and lets you (i.e. 'user') know that it hasn't been able to run this time round.
