As many have noticed, 5.1-BETA install and CDROM bits have been
available from the ftp sites for ia32, pc98, and sparc64 for a little
while now. The release engineering team had originally intended to give
a formal announcement of these, but various delays got in the way and
the announcement more-or-less fell by the wayside. You'll also note
that there still isn't an Alpha build, though David O'Brien, Wilko
Bulte, and Ruslan Ermilov have been working furiously to correct this.

Given the high number of bugs that have been found in the BETA, and the
high number of bugs that are still left to be fixed (see
http://www.freebsd.org/releases/5.1R/todo.html for details), we have
decided to push the date of the RELENG_5_1 branch back by a week to
May 27, and also cut a BETA2 on or around May 19. The BETA2 should
give a fresh platform for testing, and also allow time for some more
bugs to be fixed and features to be added. Testing on BETA1 is still
encouraged, though please remember to check the mailing lists and
update your system before reporting problems as many, many bugs have
been identified and fixed in the last 10 days.

I'd like to give a big thanks to everyone for finding and fixing bugs.
The last few weeks have been hairy but things look to be on the upswing
for a good 5.1 release. As always, everyone is encouraged to look at
the 5.1-TODO list and pitch in if they can.

The Release Engineering Team
