I forgot. Although for the most part vmware seems to run fine without a /dev/rtc, some things appear to perform very badly without it. Particularly the Windows Media Player and Shockwave and Flash plugins. Just about anything that needs to detect how fast the machine is in order to compensate and keep things happening in real time does badly without /dev/rtc, so far as I can tell.
