Unfortunately, the messenger code is crap. I'd fix it, but it would need a total rewrite, since it's a hulking behemoth. Bugs like the ones you mention are really evidence of a fundamental design flaw, more than anything else, and I really think that a "correct them as you see them" approach can't yield anything else.
