That is equivalent. Both versions match an open square bracket in addition to the other characters. [:class:] can be used within [...] to match a named character class. Although it is common to see [[:class:]] in an RE or shell pattern, the sequences '[[' and ']]' are not required. -- Jilles Tjoelker
