Blackdown took the JRE and bound it with the Netscape plug-in API (or
perhaps they've asked for a copy of the Solaris source to the Activator
plug-in). If someone is knowledgeable enough, the source code to the
JRE is only a signed FAX away, and the "how-to" can probably be gotten
from the Blackdown project.

I guess people already know this, but, anyone can register for the Java
source code and download it from Sun after filling out a license
agreement. In contrast to what the media and the press release have
suggested, the Java Activator does NOT replace the JVM in either
Netscape. It isn't even used when you visit web sites unless those web
sites have made specific changes to the HTML and the server's MIME types
to present the Java applet to the user using the Activator.

This is why Sun calls Activator a "...technology that developers need to
deploy Java applets across browsers in the enterprise." This implies
that the "enterprise" can change completely over to the Sun-based JVM so
that employees can use whatever browser they prefer while the
"enterprise" makes them use the same JVM on each, providing the true
"write once run anywhere" that Java is supposed to deliver in the
"enterprise." The web sites that don't specifically ask for the plug-in
(by using EMBED and the special MIME types for the applets) will still
use the browser's built-in JVM which is NOT CHANGED by the Java
Activator.

Enjoy,

Kris
