It is both name (for the purpose of its use) and abbreviation from
"null" (from the lingustic point of view).  See the definition of
"abbreviate" here:

So, NUL is abbreviation from "null", while SOH is abbreviation
(aka acronym) from "start of heading".

FreeBSD isn't there.  From the lingustical point of view,
FreeBSD is the collocation of word "free" and abbreviation
(acronym) "BSD".

So we're in violent agreement about the spelling?  :-)

I only insisted that "nul character" is incorrect spelling, while
"null character" and the above are correct spellings, taking case
into consideration.

``grep -w null /usr/src/lib/libc/string/*.3'' for real exmples.
